Did you know, International Earth Day 2020 is Wednesday, April 22! This year, we celebrate the 50th anniversary of this day. Think about how to serve the planet this week—cleaning up some litter on your walk or around your house, planting a tree, or simply enjoying companionship with nature!
What is EARTH Day and why is it important?
Earth Day has become one of the most widely celebrated environmental events across the globe. On this day, events are held worldwide to increase awareness and appreciation of the Earth’s natural environment. Currently it is celebrated in more than 192 countries each year. It was originally celebrated at Spring Equinox around 21 March every day but now the United Nations has designated 22 April as the International Mother Earth Day. Earth Day Network coordinates this annual day across the globe.
Ever wonder how Earth Day began?
The first Earth Day was held on April 22, 1970, with the goal of raising awareness about mankind’s role in protecting our natural world. On this date, 20 million Americans ventured outdoors and protested in favor of a more eco-conscious society.
It’s hard to believe today, but at the time, many people were not aware of some serious environmental issues—from air pollution to toxic dumps to pesticides to loss of wilderness.
How we celebrate EARTH day at home during LOCKDOWN ??
Even though we may be stuck inside and unable to participate in group activities this year because of the COVID-19 pandemic, we can find other ways to celebrate with these Earth Day activities that you can do at home.
- We should Plant a garden or add some green to your space.
- We can celebrate EARTH Day by cleaning our houses.
- We should take a promise that day to avoid single use plastic.
- We should Learn about recyclables.
- We can celebrate EARTH Day by Donate to charity.
